Folic acid bioactive contains 800 micrograms of folic acid per sublingual tablet. Folic acid, also called vitamin B9, is an important vitamin that is involved in many metabolic processes in the body. The bioactive folic acid we use (methyltetrahydrofolate, 5-MTHF) no longer needs to be activated in the body. Especially in old age, the enzymes necessary for these conversion processes can no longer be sufficiently active in certain people.
Non-bioactive folic acid must still be converted into tetrahydrofolic acid using the enzyme dihydrofolic acid reductase via the intermediate product dihydrofolic acid (DHFR). The enzyme dihydrofolic acid reductase is encoded via the DHFR gene in the human body. Mutations in the DHFR gene can cause a deficiency of this enzyme.
