Phaseolus vulgaris
Blue Lake has been around for a while and for good reason. Wonderful for NW growers, the beans are delicious eaten fresh, steamed, or canned. Bred in the Willamette Valley in the 1960’s, Blue Lake Pole Beans grow up to 7’ on vigorous vines. Hearty, strong bean flavor on this one. Harvest twice a week for optimum quality and production.
Growing Pole Beans
Seeds can be started indoors but, in my experience, grow into healthier plants if direct sown. Wait until soil temperatures have warmed in mid to late May. Thin to 4”-6” apart. Provide a sturdy trellis when you sow the seeds or as soon as they germinate-don’t wait until the growth tips are growing and falling all over. Believe me I know because I have been guilty! They will recover but won’t be happy. Use anything you have around to prop them up- bamboo, rebar, an old piece of fencing perhaps? Grow in full sun.
