The size of the flange is very important for comfortable and efficient pumping. Some mothers experience swelling of the nipple when pumping, so it is advisable to observe the appearance of the nipple during pumping. If your nipple rubs or feels trapped in the flange channel, the flange is the wrong size and you need to replace it with a right size flange insert.
